When it comes to decorating a vacation condo in a place as scenic and serene as Door County, my color choices reflect the region’s natural beauty while creating a space that feels both relaxing and welcoming. With its stunning lakeshores, charming small towns, and rich greenery, Door County provides endless inspiration for my interior design.
The design style I was after has a coastal vibe with casual, fun, and vibrant colors. I wanted to evoke a laid-back, joyful feel. I want my guests to feel the same calm inspiration reminiscent of walks through the woods, along the shore, or down the streets of Fish Creek.
Door County Inspiration
1. Embracing Coastal Hues
Door County is known for its picturesque waterfronts, so taking inspiration from the lake can create a soothing atmosphere. Coastal-inspired colors like soft blues, sandy beiges, and crisp whites instantly bring the tranquility of the water indoors.
Blue: Shades of indigo and tranquil blue mimic the calm waters and bright skies of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, giving the spaces a friendly and peaceful vibe. It is perfect for the bedrooms and living areas.
Warm Beige or Sand: Neutral tones like sandy beige or light taupe ground the space and give it a natural, earthy feel. These tones will be used in the flooring, cabinets, and walls, providing a versatile base for vivid layers of color.
Crisp White: White trim, doors, and countertops help to reflect natural light, keeping the space bright and airy, especially during the summer months. We will use white to create a clean, timeless look that complements other accent colors.
2. Incorporating Woodland Tones
Door County’s natural beauty extends beyond its shores to its wooded parks, lush landscapes, and rolling fields. Reflecting this rustic charm in your color palette brings the outdoors inside and gives your condo a cozy, down-to-earth feel. Think warm, organic hues like forest greens, deep browns, and warm oranges.
Green: Shades of forest and sage green connect our interior to the surrounding woodlands and parks. Tile, upholstery accents, and art will all have shades of green. Green will also be featured in one of the bedrooms.
Earthy Browns and Grays: These tones are mostly present in the gorgeous stone around the fireplace. Brown tones are also on light wood creating a sense of warmth and comfort. We will use light brown in flooring, furniture, trim, and accessories to create an intimate and cozy feel.
Warm Neutrals and Oranges: Terracotta and muted orange hues will be used as accent colors in textiles and artwork. These tones offer contrast and warmth, just like the warm sunset over the cool lake.
3. Offering Seasonal Flexibility
One of the great things about Door County is its appeal across all four seasons, and our vacation condo will reflect this versatility. We’re choosing textures and colors that shift with the seasons and will make our condo feel just as inviting in summer as it does during the cozy winter months. With a quick flip, the fireplace offers added warmth and coziness for a lovely winter stay.
My goal for choosing the right colors for our Door County vacation condo is to transform it into a cheerful, inviting retreat that reflects the beauty of the surrounding landscape. In opting for coastal and woodland hues, my color choices will create a space where you can relax and enjoy all the charm that Door County has to offer. We can’t wait for you to visit!
