Literal vs. Representational Design: Finding the Right Balance

In interior design, literal and representational styles offer two distinct approaches to conveying themes and ideas.

Literal design uses direct elements that clearly reference a theme or concept. For example, a coastal-inspired room filled with seashell décor, anchor motifs, and ocean-blue tones instantly evokes the seaside. This style leaves little to interpretation, making it a straightforward and recognizable approach.

Representational design, on the other hand, suggests a theme more subtly. Instead of obvious motifs, it relies on colors, textures, and shapes to hint at an idea. A representational coastal space might incorporate sandy beige tones, weathered wood, and soft blue accents to create a beach-like atmosphere—without a single seashell in sight. This approach allows for broader interpretation and a more layered, sophisticated aesthetic.

I typically strive for representational design, but in this case, I made a deliberate departure. The artwork above the headboard is a direct reference to the name of our complex, which itself is inspired by the surrounding landscape. I love this piece because it can be appreciated in every season. It also provides a striking contrast to the crisp white wall. To maintain a natural feel, I paired it with a landscape watercolor on the adjacent wall. The deep mountain hues beautifully echo the color of the carpet, reinforcing the room’s cohesive yet understated connection to nature.

This is a tip that is an oldie, but a goodie! For precise and successful design, get all the room elements selected and purchased before starting implementation. This isn’t always necessary and/or possible but do it when you can. I have a paint color selected for this headboard, but I’m going to wait until the artwork arrives to check it with my swatch before I order my paint.

#9. Crafting a Calm and Inviting Bedroom Retreat

The Current Space

Primary Bedroom

A8 at Evergreen Hill is managed by Julie’s Park Café & Motel. They do an excellent job of keeping our unit clean and tidy with crisp white bedding in every bedroom. The room has wonderful views of the trees with good natural light.

Design Concept

Primary Bedroom Design Concept

I designed this vacation rental bedroom with relaxation and natural beauty in mind, combining modern comforts with a cozy, welcoming feel. The highlight of the room is an accent wall of painted wood, which adds texture and depth to the space. The headboard will be painted in a soft, calming shade of blue. This feature wall will bring cottage charm, capturing the cozy essence of a retreat while providing a focal point that invites guests to unwind. The wood’s subtle grooves create a pleasing visual rhythm that will complement the room’s minimalist design, giving it character without overpowering the space.

To enhance the tranquil ambiance, the room will be adorned with landscape artwork that reflects the natural surroundings. Each piece was carefully selected to evoke a sense of place, with serene scenes of forests and lakes adding a layer of escapism and tranquility. The artwork’s colors are repeated in the accent wall, creating a cohesive look that feels both fresh and grounded. Together, these elements create a bedroom that’s both stylish and serene, a perfect escape for vacationers looking to relax and recharge in comfort.

An accent wall in a room can be a great way to add interest and to create a focal point. Don’t forget to also enhance the other walls! For design to be successful, keep the eye moving in an ordered and balanced manner. Repetition of color, style, and shape are design principles to apply for a sense of cohesion and harmony within a space.

#8. Closet to Coat Nook: A Smart & Stylish Entryway Upgrade

The current space

The closet is currently a locked and used by the owners only, making it inaccessible to the guests. As you can see, it’s underutilized. We look forward to our guests being able to enjoy this bonus space.

Corner Closet

Inside of Closet

One popular and effective solution for creating a welcoming and organized foyer is converting an existing closet into a compact, functional entry nook. By removing the closet door and adding a bench with coat hooks, we are creating a spot for taking off shoes or setting down bags, while the hooks offer accessible storage for coats. The bench will double as a spot to stash shoes under, helping keep the area neat and organized. This simple yet impactful upgrade will not only maximize our small footprint but will also bring character to the entryway.

Design Concept

Foyer Closet Design Concept

The entryway is one of the most important spaces in any home, as it’s the first impression guests get and the transition point for residents. A well-designed entry space sets the tone for the rest of the home, offering a welcoming and organized start. Beyond aesthetics, a functional entryway also adds convenience, making it easier to store items like coats, shoes, and bags, keeping clutter out of the main living areas. Thoughtful entryway design can transform even a small space into a powerful introduction to your home’s style and personality. When planning a remodel or building a home, dedicate a lot of space for both garage and front entry ways.

#7. Designing an Inviting Kitchen: My Vision for A8 at Evergreen Hill

The current space

The previous owners made some solid updates—new countertops, a sleek sink, and updated appliances—but the 30-something oak cabinets are still holding strong... maybe a little too strong. While we appreciate the improvements, it’s tricky to keep the new elements and replace just the cabinetry. The layout feels tight, and the wood tone dominates the space in a way that doesn’t quite match our vision for a fresh, coastal-inspired retreat. So, we’re starting from the floor up and giving this kitchen the full makeover it deserves.

Current Kitchen

There are several design layout changes that I know will make a huge difference in both functionality and aesthetics.

One of the biggest pain points has been the garbage storage. Right now, the trash bin sits openly inside the foyer closet—directly below where guests hang their coats. Having stayed at Evergreen Hill myself, I’ve always found this setup inconvenient and unpleasant. To resolve this, I’m incorporating a dedicated garbage cabinet into the kitchen design, keeping waste out of sight (and smell) while maintaining a clean and organized entryway.

The kitchen will also see significant improvements. I’ve designed the cabinetry to extend all the way to the ceiling, maximizing storage and giving the space a more polished, high-end look. Additionally, I’m adjusting the distance between the countertops and upper cabinets to the standard 18 inches—a noticeable improvement over the existing layout, which offers less clearance.

While an over-the-range microwave is a great space saver, I prefer to keep it separate when possible. The added space makes using the back burners much easier and creates a more open cooking environment. To accommodate both a microwave shelf and the new garbage cabinet, the layout will shift slightly towards the dining room, and the stove will be replaced with a smaller unit.

Lastly, I plan to install a smaller sink, which will better suit the proportions of the kitchen while freeing up additional countertop space—a valuable asset in any kitchen, but especially in a cozy vacation rental.

Design Concept

Kitchen Design Concept

Designing a small condo kitchen can be a challenge, but incorporating clever design choices can make it feel both spacious and stylish. In this kitchen, the green tile backsplash brings a refreshing brightness that adds interest without overwhelming the space. The green tones offer cohesion with the rest of the main level, making the kitchen design intentional. The backsplash becomes an instant focal point, adding personality and enjoyment that’s perfect for condo vacation living.

Paired with light-stained maple cabinets, this kitchen balances color and brightness effortlessly. Maple's soft, natural tones provide a warm contrast to the green backsplash while keeping the space feeling airy and open. The light quartz countertops help reflect natural light, making the kitchen appear larger and brighter, even with limited square footage. By pairing these elements, this kitchen design creates a cheerful, functional space that’s both current and timeless—a true example of how thoughtful choices can maximize style in a compact setting.

When planning a kitchen remodel, start with appliance research. Get a good sense for the sizes you’ll be designing around before meeting with your designers. Also, look at venting options for your range. Style and function are equally important!

Selecting Countertops

We took samples to our favorite local countertop supplier to find the perfect option for the kitchen. The white base will brighten the space and tie in beautifully with the doors and trim, while the golden veining complements the cabinetry and countertops. For the green backsplash tiles, I’ve chosen a white grout to create a crisp, timeless look.

#6. Designing a Powder Room with Punch: My Vision for A8 at Evergreen Hill

Right off the dining room is the powder room. It’s a bonus to have a second bathroom while sharing a space on vacation. Everyone has experienced the pain of having to wait their turn for one bathroom.

The Current Space

Powder Room Before

We plan to reuse the quartz countertop and faucet. Those materials are new (done by the previous owners) and fit well with my design goals. The condo was built in 1992. It was standard, in those days, for the countertop to be only 32” off the floor. Today, it is standard to be around 36”. Since everything will adjust up, I selected a light that points up as well. Keeping the mirror large and useable.

Design Concept

Powder Room Design Concept

My coastal woodland vibe continues with plans for a custom painted vanity cabinet in this gorgeous green from Sherwin Williams. The nickel finishes sparkle and light bounces from the white door, mirror, and lighting. The dimensional frame on the mirror is its own work of art, but I am also including another piece of art titled Birch Spring Batik.

LVP, or luxury vinyl plank, is a popular flooring choice. It has a look of wood with lower maintenance and higher durability qualities. While real wood isn’t always optimal to use in bathrooms due to moisture, LVP is a recommended material. It’s also easier to replace than tile. I like how it will offer continuity with all the flooring on this main level.

#5. Designing a Living and Dining Room Retreat: My Vision for A8 at Evergreen Hill

The current space

The main floor is one open space including a living room, dining room, and kitchen. There is also a powder room on this main floor. Below is a view of the furnished living room when we purchased it.

Living Room Before

One item we plan to keep is the table lamp in the corner. The style fits right along with our intended style, but we plan to paint it white.

I’m keeping the furniture layout similar to the existing space, with a few key updates. The sleeper sofa will be replaced with another sleeper sofa, and I’m adding two armchairs with a swivel feature to allow for easy movement and engagement with the dining area, windows, and fireplace. The current rectangular dining table will be swapped for a round table to encourage better conversation and a more inviting flow.

This gathering space is all about bringing in cheerful color reflecting coastal and woodland hues. Along with cheerful colors, I selected modern shapes seen in the art and textiles.  This space will look lively and inviting while being soft to the touch. Natural light ties it all together, making every corner feel warm and welcoming.

Design Concept

Living Room Concept

Adding white to a space creates a bright, clean, and timeless look that complements other accent colors. Often white surfaces need more maintenance. If that’s a concern, apply white to items that are lower touch, like lighting, window treatments, and art.

Furniture Layout

This space is all about gathering and relaxing. It’s condensed enough so everyone from the kitchen to the sofa can enjoy each other’s company. A vibrant look with soft to-the-touch feels. A wonderful style that will be a joy to be in during a visit.

#3. Interior Design of a Getaway: Inspired by the Beauty of Door County

When it comes to decorating a vacation condo in a place as scenic and serene as Door County, my color choices reflect the region’s natural beauty while creating a space that feels both relaxing and welcoming. With its stunning lakeshores, charming small towns, and rich greenery, Door County provides endless inspiration for my interior design.

The design style I was after has a coastal vibe with casual, fun, and vibrant colors. I wanted to evoke a laid-back, joyful feel. I want my guests to feel the same calm inspiration reminiscent of walks through the woods, along the shore, or down the streets of Fish Creek.

Door County Inspiration

1. Embracing Coastal Hues

Door County is known for its picturesque waterfronts, so taking inspiration from the lake can create a soothing atmosphere. Coastal-inspired colors like soft blues, sandy beiges, and crisp whites instantly bring the tranquility of the water indoors.

  • Blue: Shades of indigo and tranquil blue mimic the calm waters and bright skies of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, giving the spaces a friendly and peaceful vibe. It is perfect for the bedrooms and living areas.

  • Warm Beige or Sand: Neutral tones like sandy beige or light taupe ground the space and give it a natural, earthy feel. These tones will be used in the flooring, cabinets, and walls, providing a versatile base for vivid layers of color.

  • Crisp White: White trim, doors, and countertops help to reflect natural light, keeping the space bright and airy, especially during the summer months. We will use white to create a clean, timeless look that complements other accent colors.

2. Incorporating Woodland Tones

Door County’s natural beauty extends beyond its shores to its wooded parks, lush landscapes, and rolling fields. Reflecting this rustic charm in your color palette brings the outdoors inside and gives your condo a cozy, down-to-earth feel. Think warm, organic hues like forest greens, deep browns, and warm oranges.

  • Green: Shades of forest and sage green connect our interior to the surrounding woodlands and parks. Tile, upholstery accents, and art will all have shades of green. Green will also be featured in one of the bedrooms.

  • Earthy Browns and Grays: These tones are mostly present in the gorgeous stone around the fireplace. Brown tones are also on light wood creating a sense of warmth and comfort. We will use light brown in flooring, furniture, trim, and accessories to create an intimate and cozy feel.

  • Warm Neutrals and Oranges: Terracotta and muted orange hues will be used as accent colors in textiles and artwork. These tones offer contrast and warmth, just like the warm sunset over the cool lake.

3. Offering Seasonal Flexibility

One of the great things about Door County is its appeal across all four seasons, and our vacation condo will reflect this versatility. We’re choosing textures and colors that shift with the seasons and will make our condo feel just as inviting in summer as it does during the cozy winter months. With a quick flip, the fireplace offers added warmth and coziness for a lovely winter stay.

My goal for choosing the right colors for our Door County vacation condo is to transform it into a cheerful, inviting retreat that reflects the beauty of the surrounding landscape. In opting for coastal and woodland hues, my color choices will create a space where you can relax and enjoy all the charm that Door County has to offer. We can’t wait for you to visit!
