#14 Choosing the Perfect Flooring for Our Door County Vacation Rental

When remodeling our vacation rental in Door County, we knew that choosing the right flooring was one of the most important decisions we’d make. As an interior designer and a flooring store owner, we had the perfect balance of style and functionality in mind. Our goal was to create a space that looked beautiful, felt inviting, and could stand up to the demands of a vacation rental.

After much consideration, we landed on a combination of luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring in the main living areas and bathrooms, paired with carpeting on the stairs and in the bedrooms. Here’s why these choices were the perfect fit for our newly remodeled getaway.

Luxury Vinyl Plank: The Ideal Choice for Living Areas & Bathrooms

1. Durability & Water Resistance

LVP is incredibly durable, making it perfect for high-traffic areas like the living room and kitchen. It’s scratch-resistant, which is essential for handling suitcases, furniture movement, and sandy shoes after a day at the beach. In the bathrooms, its waterproof properties make it a no-brainer, protecting against spills, humidity, and moisture-related damage.

2. Easy Maintenance & Cleaning

Vacation rentals see a steady stream of guests, which means flooring needs to be easy to clean. LVP doesn’t require special treatments—just a quick sweep and mop, and it looks as good as new. Unlike hardwood, it won’t warp over time from moisture exposure, making it a low-maintenance yet high-end choice.

3. Stylish & Realistic Look

Today’s LVP mimics the look and texture of real wood so convincingly that most guests won’t even realize it’s not solid hardwood. We chose a warm, natural wood tone that complements the serene, coastal feel of Door County, creating a space that’s both elegant and inviting

Why Carpet Belongs in Bedrooms & On the Stairs

While LVP was our top choice for the main living spaces, we knew that carpeting would be the perfect touch for the stairs and bedrooms. Here’s why:

1. Safety First: Carpeted Stairs Reduce Slip & Fall Risks

Safety is always a top priority in a vacation rental. Hard flooring on stairs can be a slipping hazard, especially for young children or older guests. Carpet provides much-needed traction, reducing the risk of falls. Plus, in the event of a misstep, carpet offers a softer landing compared to hardwood or LVP.

2. Sound Absorption for a Restful Stay

Not everyone in a vacation rental follows the same schedule. Some guests are early risers eager to catch the sunrise over Lake Michigan, while others may enjoy sleeping in. Carpet in the bedrooms helps absorb sound, preventing footsteps and movement from disrupting a restful night’s sleep. This is especially beneficial in a home where families or groups are staying together.

3. Cozy & Comfortable Underfoot

After a long day exploring Door County, there’s nothing better than stepping onto soft carpet in the bedroom. It creates a warm, cozy feel that enhances relaxation—exactly what you want in a vacation retreat.
